At first glance, Karma Kitchen seems to be about serving food. But the real practice is serving as a way to grow — not "doing good" for others, but using service as a mirror for our own transformation.
Every interaction offers an opportunity to practice generosity at the level of actions, words, and thoughts. In reality, every moment of our lives offers that opportunity — but we're not always aware of it.

Each small act of other-centeredness relaxes the habit of self-centeredness. Multiply that by a day of serving strangers, and you glimpse what's possible. You leave with more energy than you came with — not despite giving, but because of it.

We started ServiceSpace with four friends in 1999, going to a homeless shelter saying "We want to give, just for the love of it." We didn't know what we wanted to do, but we wanted to help.
That experience revealed something: there was an inner transformation happening that was beyond money, almost priceless. We weren't just looking to make a difference out there — we were discovering something within.
